Speed is a Byproduct of Sequence.
You cannot swing faster by simply swinging harder. If your joints lack the range of motion to sequence correctly, your brain will artificially brake your swing to protect your spine.
The Kinematic Sequence
According to 2022 data from the Titleist Performance Institute (TPI), the most efficient ball strikers on earth transfer energy in a highly specific order: Pelvis → Thorax → Lead Arm → Club. When amateur golfers lack hip internal rotation, they are forced to spin their shoulders early (over the top) or fire their hands prematurely.
The "Braking" Mechanism
Imagine driving a Ferrari with a restricted steering wheel. If you can't turn the wheel fully, you have to slow down to make the corner. Your central nervous system operates the same way. If your lead hip cannot internally rotate to accept the force of the downswing, your brain prevents you from swinging at maximum velocity to prevent a labral tear.
Power Drain: Common Mobility Faults
| Mobility Deficit | Resulting Swing Fault | Estimated Distance Loss |
|---|---|---|
| Poor Thoracic Rotation | Loss of Posture / Flat Shoulder Plane | 10-15 yards |
| Restricted Ankle Dorsiflexion | Early Extension (Hips move toward ball) | 15-20 yards |
| Weak Glute Medius | Sway / Slide (Poor weight shift) | 10-12 yards |
FAQ
- Q: Will lifting heavy weights give me more speed than mobility?
- A: Strength is force production. Mobility is force application. If you have a massive engine but broken axles, the car won't go fast. You need both, but mobility unlocks the ability to use the strength you already have.
